The Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies Library was officially opened in 1979 for use. Its initial collection was a mixed grill of law journals, reviews, reports, and textbooks donated by law journal institutions in other commonwealth countries.

The Library has from 1989 been named after His Excellency, Judge T. O. Elias, in recognition of his efforts as the founding father of the Institute. A special reading room for senior scholars has been named after Hon. Justice Mohammed Bello, C. J. N. and foundation Chairman of the Institute Council. NIALS Library is the largest Law Library in Nigeria and by extension, in Africa South of the Sahara. The vision and intent of the founding fathers was that the Institute Library should be a centre rich in collection of rare materials non-existent elsewhere so as to support the mission of the Institute. Its collections have grown to over 60,000 books and well over 1000 journal titles. Local and foreign law reports and laws are available and accessible in the Library.
